Didi Gregorius 2020 Outlook: A Victim of Shortstop Depth
5 years agoIt was not that long ago that Didi Gregorius was one of the top fantasy baseball shortstops being drafted, but after a major injury and a sub-par second half of the 2019 season, fantasy managers are forgetting about him. Gregorius returned in June of 2019 after Tommy John surgery and really never got it going. The overall stat line (.238-16-47-61-2) is not great but was likely injury-related. There were some who suspected Gregorius returned too soon from surgery. Couple that with a late-season shoulder injury and one could point to that for his offensive struggles. We have to assume that he’s healthy since the Philadelphia Phillies gave him a nice one-year deal in the offseason. Playing in hitter-friendly Citizen Bank Park is going to be very nice for Gregorius’ power as well. All of Gregorius’ career home runs have been pulled and Citizen Bank Park ranks sixth in pulled barreled home runs with nearly 71% (courtesy of PitcherList.com). Steamer agrees with a return to fantasy goodness as they project Gregorius for 25 home runs in 2020 which would resemble his pre-2019 production. He is being drafted outside the top-20 shortstops and if all goes right, Gregorius will finish closer to the tenth-ranked shortstop making his ADP of 199 a bargain.
