Daulton Varsho 2021 Player Outlook: Ready to Rebound from Rough Rookie Year
4 years agoArizona Diamondbacks catcher/outfielder Daulton Varsho will be ready this year to prove why he was considered one of the top catching prospects entering the 2020 season as he looks to shake off his poor debut campaign. Spending more time in the outfield than behind the plate, Varsho slashed .188/.287/.366 over 37 games, and while his 28.7 percent strikeout rate was higher than his career mark in the minors, his 10.4 percent walk rate was a positive sign in an otherwise rough year. He also seemed to heat up slightly at the plate late in the season, slashing .197/.291/.408 in the month of September. Looking at some of his advanced metrics there are indicators that he could be poised to make a solid impact in fantasy in 2021. His 11.1 percent HR/FB rate matched up with his career mark in the minors, and his 18.4 degree launch angle ranked him in the top 50 in the league among batters with at least 100 plate appearances. Varsho has shown 15 homer, 15 steal potential throughout his career in the minors, which is what managers should expect him to reach in 2021, making him a solid add at his current ADP of 163.
