Darnell Washington 2023 NFL Player Outlook: Could Be A Big Red-Zone Threat For The Steelers
2 years agoPittsburgh Steelers tight end Darnell Washington was an impressive pickup by the franchise in the 2023 NFL Draft. He slipped in the third round due to medical concerns as he sustained several foot injuries during his time at Georgia. Washington was selected 93rd overall by the Steelers and has impressed offensive coordinator Matt Canada with his blocking ability in OTAs. The 21-year-old tight end ran a 4.64-second 40-yard dash at the combine, which is impressive given his size. During his three years with Georgia, Washington racked up 45 receptions for 775 yards and scored three touchdowns over 27 games. His production was relatively low, but he was more of a blocking TE than a receiving one, which could also continue in the NFL. The Steelers have Pat Freiermuth as their TE1, and he averaged 11.2 yards per reception last season. With quarterback Kenny Pickett ready to enter his sophomore season in the NFL, Freiermuth will likely get more involved in the offense. Washington could have very few touches in his rookie season but could be a big red-zone threat. Given how stacked many options the Steelers have on offense, it is highly unlikely that the former Georgia tight end will be able to earn points for fantasy managers in his rookie season and is mainly a stash in dynasty leagues.
