Darius Garland 2019 Player Outlook
5 years agoThere are a bushel of unknowns surrounding Darius Garland entering his rookie season with Cleveland. But despite that, the No. 5 overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft presents a tantalizing fantasy option if things break his way. Garland will play the first three months of the season as a 19-year-old after playing just five games collegiately for Vanderbilt. A meniscus injury put him on the shelf after he averaged 16.2 points per game on 53.7 percent shooting overall, including 47.8 percent from deep while averaging 2.2 made triples. While the Cavaliers boast a new head coach in John Beilein and a wealth of minutes for a developing young player, Garland’s fantasy prospects coincide with the development of fellow youngster Collin Sexton; when considering one in drafts, the other looms. Beilein has spoken heading into the season of how he hopes Garland and Sexton will combine to be a position-less backcourt, a risk that owners will have to take into account when selecting the Cavs’ most recent top pick. For now, Garland is a solid depth play in the later rounds, but he unquestionably boasts the potential to climb the ranks quickly, even if there are some lumps along the way.
