Danny Duffy Was Solid Again
6 years agoKansas City Royals starting pitcher Danny Duffy was robbed of a decision in Sunday's game due to a meltdown by his closer, but he held up his end of the bargain. A seven-run output by his offense didn't hurt his cause, but Duffy looked dominant against the Yanks as he held them to just one earned run in six innings. Three unearned runs scored in the sixth after an error by his shortstop, but the big lead allowed him to absorb those without much damage. Unfortunately, some underlying numbers are a bit more concerning. First, Duffy's only striking out seven batters per nine innings, his worst rate in years. Tack on a 1.33 WHIP, and Duffy's 3.12 ERA is more a mirage than anything. Expect that to rise in the coming weeks, possibly as soon as this weekend when Duffy faces the Rangers in Arlington.
