D'Andre Swift 2020 Outlook: New RB1 in Motor City
5 years agoTwo years after drafting Kerryon Johnson in the second round of the NFL draft, the Lions opted for another RB to potentially take over as their lead back going forward. D'Andre Swift comes out of the running back factory that is Georgia and provides a versatile skill-set that Lions' run-loving OC, Darrell Bevell, will look to exploit. Kerryon Johnson showed flashes as a rookie but his down sophomore season must have left a sour taste in the front office, especially given that he has missed six games in each of the past two seasons. Swift and Johnson will probably complement each other from the start and move a heavier workload towards the more talented Swift as the season drags on. Swift is best utilized in a Kamara-esque role where his carries and targets are nearly even as to not grind him up in the middle of the trenches. He has the body to handle a large touch-share but is more valuable if utilized as a pseudo-receiver. For 2020, it is hard to buy into Swift too early with Johnson healthy (at least for the moment). However, at the right price in the middle of a redraft, particularly PPR, he is a better RB option than someone inconsistent or questionable health-wise.
