Cody Morris 2023 MLB Outlook: Upside Pick But Health And Role Tempers Value
2 years agoIn an alternate Universe, Cody Morris would be coming into the 2023 season as a previous Rookie of the Year winner and a decent bet to win the Cy Young Award. Unfortunately, injuries have prevented Morris from reaching that potential but he's still been able to show glimpses of his talents. Morris made his MLB debut last year and had a 1-2 W-L record, 2.28 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 23 Ks (23.2 IP). Morris didn't appear for the Guardians until September but five of his seven outings came as a starter. He moved into a relief role for the playoffs and it's likely he'll be a swing-man/long reliever to begin the 2023 season. Given Morris only totaled 45.0 IP across all levels last year due to a shoulder injury and 61.0 IP in 2021, expecting a significant workload this year would be foolish. He also underwent Tommy John Surgery shortly before being drafted so ~100 IP is about the most we can expect from Morris this year. In dynasty leagues, Morris is a good option and his high K% in the Minors suggests he can offer some fantasy value in 2023. With an ADP of ~380, Morris is a late-round roll-of-the-dice pick that could pay off if he can stay healthy.
