Chris Martin To Close In Texas
Chris Martin will close with Shawn Kelley (infection) on the injured list, in the opinion of MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan. Jose Leclerc, who started the year as the closer, was removed from the role and will continue to be used in the eighth inning until the Rangers feel he's ready to return to ninth-inning duties. “He’s close,” manager Chris Woodward said. “He’s getting there.” Martin, 32, picked up his first career save on Wednesday and has a 3.14 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 9.4 K/9 in 14 outings (14 1/3 innings) in 2019. He struggled in his three previous seasons with the Rangers, Rockies and Yankees, so Martin isn't a lock to post solid numbers moving forward. But he's widely available in most leagues and is worth a flier if you're chasing saves in the short term.
