After a lap 186 crash in Monday's Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway where it appeared that Chase Elliott intentionally turned into Denny Hamlin's right rear quarter, sending him head-first into the wall, many fans and media members believed that Elliott would be suspended for one race due to those actions. This precedent was set by a similar happening at Las Vegas last season between Bubba Wallace and Kyle Larson. Today, NASCAR announced their penalties and has decided that Chase Elliott will be suspended for the upcoming race at Gateway. Hendrick Motorsports released the following statement regarding NASCAR's decision: "We understand NASCAR's need to maintain consistency in its officiating. The penalty will not be appealed, and we will submit a formal request for a playoff waiver. Corey LaJoie, 31, will drive the No. 9 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 this weekend at World Wide Technology Raceway. We are grateful to Corey for stepping in and to the team at Spire Motorsports for making him available."--Jordan McAbee
