Chase Briscoe Unlikely to Contend at Atlanta Despite Unexpected Playoff Bid
1 month agoAfter his successful Hail Mary in last week's Southern 500 granted him a playoff bid, Chase Briscoe qualified tenth for tomorrow's Atlanta race. He has been consistently fast in qualifying on drafting tracks with the Next Gen car as this marks his 11th top ten start in 17 races, but he hasn't run very well in the races and has only led more than five laps once at the 2023 Daytona summer race where he led 67 laps from the pole before crashing late. Moreover, he has never had a top ten finish at Atlanta. Briscoe has significantly improved at avoiding crashes this year but he hasn't had as much speed as his teammate Josh Berry. Ford's overall speed will likely help him, but Briscoe seems to still struggle with the mechanics of drafting. If he doesn't crash, he should register a decent finish, but he's unlikely to advance.
