Carlos Correa 2021 Fantasy Outlook: MVP Upside No Longer
4 years agoBefore 2020, the question of Houston Astros shortstop Carlos Correa's fantasy stardom seemed to only be about his health. He had played just one full season in his five-year career but had always posted strong numbers and flashed MVP-level upside. In 2020, he did stay on the field for a "full" season, but he really underwhelmed in those 58 games. Correa hit just .264/.326/.383 with five home runs and zero steals. Correa is now entering his age-26 season with twice as many question marks as before. Not only do the health questions exist, but now we cannot even be sure if he will be great when he's on the field. He's maintained strong plate discipline (22% strikeout rate, 7% walk rate), which is cause for optimism, but he really did not have a good batted-ball profile in 2020 with a low .306 expected wOBA and an average exit velocity of just 88.6 mph. Correa still possesses the upside to crush his low draft price, but we think those waiting for him to finally have an MVP season will be waiting forever.
