Carlos Correa 2020 Outlook: Power Surge Coming
5 years agoHouston Astros shortstop Carlos Correa has been unfairly considered a fantasy disappointment until this point in his career. After hitting 22 home runs in 99 games as a 21-year-old in his Major League debut, expectations for the right-hander were outsized. He played a full season in 2016 but saw a regression in his power and speed numbers and has then battled injury in every season since. As a result, people seem to have given up on Correa, but that would be a mistake. Despite only playing 75 games last year, he kept close to his career average 11% walk rate while setting career highs with a .289 ISO and .568 slugging percentage. The power boost is supported by a 13.5% barrels per batted ball event, 42.2 hard-hit% and a .391 xwOBA, which put him in the top-20 in the league. The injury risk will always remain, but Correa is still only 25 and entering his athletic prime. With the nature of his injuries, it seems likely that he will play a 140+ game season sometime soon. He's worth taking that chance on as his power growth suggests he could put up .280-30-100-100-5 if he can get to that 140 landmark.
