Bryce Harper 2023 MLB Player Outlook: Elbow Surgery Hurts Two-Time MVP's Value
2 years agoFor the second straight season, Philadelphia Phillies superstar outfielder Bryce Harper will miss significant time as the two-time NL MVP underwent off-season Tommy John surgery that will eliminate him from first-half action. Harper is likely to play exclusively at the designated hitter position upon his return, but whether he can get up to speed quickly is a concern. Of course, Harper is among the game's elite when healthy coming off a season in which he hit 18 home runs, produced 65 RBI, 63 runs, and 11 stolen bases, good for a 138 wRC+. It was a slightly below-average season by the 30-year-old's lofty standards, but it was clear the lingering elbow injury didn't hamper him at the dish. Streamer projects Harper to appear in 78 contests in 2023 with 16 HR, 50 RBI, 48 R, and seven SB with a 140 wRC+ that aligns with his career 141 mark. That said, his ADP has fallen to 106 given the murky injury outlook, but Harper could be stashed and act as an elite trade-deadline acquisition at no cost for the stretch run.
