Brett Baty 2023 MLB Player Outlook: Potential to Make an Impact, Currently Blocked In Queens
2 years agoHaving seen New York Mets third baseman Brett Baty live around 8-10 times now, there's no doubt in my mind that he will be a solid Major League bat. In 237 career minor league games, Baty slashed .289/.390/.493 with 60 doubles and 38 home runs, including a .315/.410/.533 slash line in 95 games last season before his promotion to the Mets. Baty has displayed an average to slightly above-average hit tool with the ability to draw walks above 10% of the time. While he's had some swing-and-miss issues at times, he's mostly kept the strikeout rate in check at around the 23-25% range. There's above-average power here as well that should lead to plenty of seasons above 20 home runs and maybe even flirt with 30. The real question is, when do we see Baty this season? The Mets still have Eduardo Escobar in the mix at the hot corner and a crowded outfield. Granted, Escobar and Mark Canha (projected LF) aren't surefire locks to hold their respective starting gigs all season, so we could see Baty at one or both of those spots if he begins the season hitting well in Triple-A.
