Brady Singer 2023 MLB Player Outlook: Underlying Metrics Cause of Concern
2 years agoFollowing a rocky start to his 2022 season, Kansas City Royals right-hander Brady Singer ended up sporting some quality surface stats. Singer finished the season with a 3.23 ERA across 24 starts, and 27 appearances spanning 151 1/3 innings pitched. He was solid in the second half, turning in a tidy 2.53 ERA across 81 2/3 frames with a fantastic 5.2% BB% to boot. However, the 26-year-old's fantasy upside was capped due to a lukewarm 24.2% K%, a figure Steamer projects to slip to a 21.9% mark in 2023. More concerning are Singer's Statcast rankings. He ranked in the league's 28th percentile in average exit velocity, 44th in xERA/xwOBA, 33rd in barrel rate, and 17th in chase rate. His control is robust, but Singer's minor-league track record suggests he will not be a strikeout pitcher in the big leagues. The 2018 first-round pick is Rotoballer's 52nd-ranked starter and the 174th-ranked player coming into the 2023 campaign while boasting an ADP of around 190 in NFBC leagues. ATC projects Singer with a 3.87 ERA, 3.74 FIP, and an 8.34 K:9 across 175 innings in 2023. Given the uneasy metrics and limited strikeout potential, we don't suggest reaching for Singer anywhere before the 175th pick.
