Austin Seferian-Jenkins 2019 Outlook: That Was Quick
6 years agoWhether it be on-field injuries or off-field issues the story of Austin Seferian-Jenkins to this point has been untapped talent. At 6’5 and 260 pounds, he has the size to succeed at the tight end position in today’s NFL. The question is his maturity and health. From being released by the Buccaneers for drinking problems to missing all but five games last season due to injury he has been a disaster. With the news he is not going to be at Patriots camp, this might be it for Seferian-Jenkins.
He was said to be a good teammate in Jacksonville last season, and it looks like that might be the reason he is leaving New England so that his issues do not affect the team. Citing personal issues, he left the team and was informed he would be released once he finally does return. While this means Matt LaCosse will be the tight end in the Patriots offense, this is also likely the last chance for Seferian-Jenkins.
If this is the end it has been a waste of talent for the player out of Washington. After being taken in the second round by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers he was released due to drinking issues as well as a DUI. While he had one productive season in New York with the Jets which led to a two-year $10 million with Jacksonville, this experiment lasted only one of those years.
For his sake, I hope he is alright and gets his life on track. Whether that be a return to the NFL or not I want nothing but the best for him moving forward. As for fantasy, he clearly cannot be drafted. Unless a number of injuries occur, he will not be on an NFL roster this season as anything other than a backup. The tight end position is already bad enough and there are not enough to go around who are fantasy valuable. So, adding a backup is not going to happen. So, while wishing all the best for him personally, he does nothing for you fantasy-wise and therefore, do not even consider him.
