Anthony Swarzak Gets Save For Mets
7 years agoWhen closer Jeurys Familia went down with a shoulder injury last week, many assumed Robert Gsellman would pick up the ninth inning duties for the New York Mets. Those assumptions would seem to be wrong. On Sunday against the New York Yankees, Gsellman pitched the eighth inning in a 2-0 victory, while the ninth inning honors went to Anthony Swarzak. In picking up his first save of the season, Swarzak allowed a walk and struck out one. While he got the opportunity last night, it may be a little rash to treat Swarzak as the Mets’ sole closer moving forward until Familia’s return. Manager Mickey Callaway tends to prefer the matchups over sticking with set roles, something he’s preached since spring training (but didn’t do with Familia). If there was ever a time to practice that philosophy, it would be now. Swarzak obviously should have the edge for fantasy purposes at the moment, but don’t be surprised if you see other names in the ninth inning moving forward.
