Anthony DeSclafani 2022 Player Outlook: Solid Value Pick For Back-Of-Rotation Support
3 years agoSan Francisco Giants starting pitcher Anthony DeSclafani experienced the Giants' revitalization magic in 2021, posting a career season. The 31-year-old went 13-7 with a 3.17 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, and 22.5% strikeout rate over 167 ⅔ innings pitched. He was rewarded with a three-year, $36 million contract. The biggest change for DeSclafani was the use of his slider. He relied primarily on his slider at 35.7% usage, which was his best strikeout pitch with a 15.6% swinging-strike rate. His pitch mix seemed to keep hitters off-balance, as he also saw better results from his four-seam fastball (27.1% usage, .250 batting average) and sinker (18.6% usage, .187 batting average). His batted-ball profile was league average, and his 4.11 SIERA reflected that. However, his home park should allow him to continue to outperform his underlying numbers to a degree. DeSclafani is currently being drafted at about pick 215, making him the 82nd pitcher off the board. This seems like a generally reasonable range, depending on the needs of fantasy managers at the later stages of drafts. However, he would end up being a great value at that ADP if he can come close to replicating his 2021 season.
