Andy Dalton 2021 Outlook: Should Start Week 1, But on Short Leash
3 years agoThe plan from the Chicago Bears is to have Andy Dalton start the season as the number one quarterback. He started nine games last year for the Dallas Cowboys after Dak Prescott broke his ankle. Dalton went a respectable 4-5 on a team that was going nowhere offensively. He did manage three game-winning drives on the season while throwing 14 touchdowns and getting picked off eight times. Dalton does not likely have the arm strength to go downfield like he used to. The Chicago quarterback will turn 34 later in the 2021 season and Father Time is catching up some. Also, the Bears expect to have a short leash on Dalton. Justin Fields is basically just taking notes for the first segment of the season. Chicago has the eighth toughest schedule in the league and Dalton's QB36 ADP is not exactly all that endearing. There are a few spots that Fields could start. One may be as soon as Week 4 against the Detroit Lions at home. Chicago having a quarterback who can't even average 200 yards a game or stretch defenses will wear thin quickly with the fanbase. His adjusted yards gained per pass attempt is at six now and not expected to go up much in 2021. Again, expect Fields by Week 4 or maybe Week 8 at the absolute latest. Dalton is just a placeholder in the system as he mentors the young rookie.
