Andrew Heaney 2021 Fantasy Outlook: Health The Key To Unlocking Value
4 years agoLast year, Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Andrew Heaney avoided a stint on the injured list for the first time since 2015, which is impressive given he has spent a total of 409 days on the IL in the last five years. In 2018, Heaney did make 30 starts and throw 180 innings, so you could also believe he's turned the corner health-wise with two of the last three seasons providing a good accumulation of innings. Performance-wise, Heaney has been a useful fantasy contributor, putting up good strikeout numbers, albeit with a pretty high ERA. Heaney has a 25.6% strikeout rate since 2018, which is 25th-best among all starting pitchers with at least 300 innings thrown in that time. Although Heaney hasn't had a year with a sub-4.00 ERA since 2015, his underlying numbers do indicate there is more than meets the eye. In the last three years, Heaney's 4.42 ERA is significantly higher than his xFIP (3.91) and his SIERA (3.84), so even if he can lower his ERA, Heaney should provide value at his current ADP of around 209. Given his ADP, the injury risk with Heaney is built in and a repeat of his 2018 season (180 innings, 180 K's, 4.15 ERA and 1.20 WHIP ) is achievable. Heaney is still only 29 years old, too, so he shouldn't be considered in decline. In fact, he could be a late bloomer on the brink of having his best season, provided he stays healthy, of course.
