Adalberto Mondesi 2023 MLB Player Outlook: Durability Always a Cause for Concern
After appearing in just 15 games and hitting .140 with the Royals in 2022, Adalberto Mondesi (knee) suffered another long-term injury, tearing his ACL and missing the remainder of the season. Not only did he miss a considerable chunk of last season, but he's also going to miss most of, if not all, of the 2023 preseason after appearing in just 109 games over the last three campaigns. While he played 59 of the 60 games in the shortened 2020 season, that's not much baseball over the previous three years as he moves to the Boston Red Sox for the 2023 season. The 27-year-old could be ready for Opening Day, but Mondesi struggled at the plate in each of the last four seasons, hitting .248 with 21 home runs, a slight 4.6% BB%, and an elevated 30.6% K% rate in that time. Of course, he ranks fifth in all baseball with 87 stolen bases in that 211-game stretch. However, his lack of on-base skills and lengthy injury history is also capping that part of his game. Add it up, Mondesi is our 26th-ranked shortstop with an ADP in the 250 range. With Steamer projecting Mondesi for just 12 home runs and 23 steals, Mondesi can certainly be left alone before that ADP threshold. Given the power/speed potential when healthy, keeping an eye on his playing time with Trevor Story out for most, if not all, of the 2023 season is prudent.
