Justin Bour 2019 Outlook: Lefty Slugger Brings Power vs RHP But Little Else
6 years agoAfter a breakout 2017 season with 25 home runs, 83 runs batted in and a spot in the HR Derby, first baseman Justin Bour couldn't repeat his success. While his power numbers weren't too far off the mark, Bour's average fell from .289 to .227 and his strikeout rate rose to a career-high 24.8%. While some of his struggles can be attributed to a far inferior supporting cast on a rebuilding Marlins team, Bour saw personal declines in exit velocity and hard hit rate. His .404 xSLG also leaves much to be desired for a player who relies on the long ball for value. A move to L.A. may be a chance for a fresh start but it's likely he will just be a platoon bat, as he was horrible against LHP last year (.192 BAA) just as he's been his whole career (.219 BAA). He could be replaced altogether by prospect Matt Thaiss, if things go as planned for the Angels. Bour is not a player to target in anything but deep AL-only leagues.
