Jeff Hoffman is a fantasy baseball waiver wire pickup for closers and saves in Week 12 (2024). Hoffman is a good free agent waiver wire add for saves leagues.
BALLER MOVE: Add in 12+ Leagues
ROSTERED IN: 46% of Leagues
ANALYSIS: Jose Alvarado is the closer in Philadelphia, but Jeff Hoffman has performed well in that role this season as well, in addition to his role as setup man. Aside from Alvarado's first outing of the season in which he allowed five earned runs, he has been superb, so his role is not in jeopardy. But there are days when Alvarado is unavailable, and also with Alvarado being lefty, Hoffman offers a different look as a righty, allowing the latter to record five saves on the season (Alvarado has 11). It is almost a 1A/1B situation.

Looking at the numbers, Hoffman's actually look more dominant than Alvarado's in nearly the same amount of innings pitched. Alvarado has a 1.02 WHIP, 17.6% K-BB%, and 29 K in 27 1/3 IP, compared to Hoffman's 0.98 WHIP, 24.8% K-BB%, and 35 K in 27 2/3 IP. Regardless, Hoffman should already be rostered in any league that awards holds, and is a solid pickup in 12+ team leagues with his sporadic saves and strong strikeout rates. If Alvarado were to falter or succumb to injury, Hoffman would be a slam-dunk (er, home run) add in all formats.
