Josh Downs Injury Update for Fantasy Football

Back in training camp, the Indianapolis Colts wide receiver suffered a high-ankle sprain that kept him off the field for the team's Week 1 and Week 2 losses, but the team looks set to get a major boost in Week 3.

According to Downs himself, the second-year wideout is planning to play on Sunday when the Colts take on the Chicago Bears.

Fantasy managers who have been waiting for Downs to return look to finally get their wish this week. But does that mean fantasy managers should play Downs?

Josh Downs Fantasy Football Outlook

The Colts have a pretty confusing situation at wide receiver. Michael Pittman Jr. is the No. 1 guy, but Alec Pierce has surprisingly emerged as a top option as well, catching eight passes for 181 yards and two touchdowns so far this season. Meanwhile, there's also rookie Adonai Mitchell, who has just two catches but has been targeted nine times.

Before the season, Downs looked set to be the team's No. 2, at least until Mitchell got used to the NFL game, but the emergence of Pierce as a viable deep threat for Richardson has changed the math.

Downs should be left on fantasy benches this week. We have no idea what his role will look like, so it's tough to even view him as a top-75 play at the wide receiver position. The biggest impact he'll have in fantasy is that he might cut into the role of the team's other receivers, lowering everyone's outcomes.
