Week 9 Quarterback Rankings Outlooks

Kyler Murray, Arizona Cardinals

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray (foot) has missed the last two games, but is expected to return for their Week 9 matchup against the Dallas Cowboys. Murray has struggled a bit in five games this season, averaging 192 passing yards per game to go with 35 rushing yards per game and a career low 6.0 yards per attempt. Veteran Jacoby Brissett filled in admirably in his place, but head coach Jonathan Gannon has made it clear that Murray is the team's starting quarterback when healthy.

The 28-year-old gets a great spot in his return out of the bye week against a Dallas defense that just got torched by the Broncos for 44 points in Week 8. Murray should be the top quarterback add wherever he is available.

Matthew Stafford, Los Angeles Rams

Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford is coming off his fifth career game with five touchdown passes, completing 21 of 33 pass attempts for 182 yards in their 35-7 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars in London. Stafford and the Rams were on bye in Week 8, and they'll return for a soft home matchup against the New Orleans Saints, who are tied with the Jets and Titans for the worst record in the league. The 37-year-old is expected to have his star receiver Puka Nacua back, who missed Week 7 with an ankle injury. Stafford is a prime streaming candidate for Week 9 and ranks as RotoBaller's QB9.

Brock Purdy, San Francisco 49ers

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan isn't ready to say if quarterback Brock Purdy (toe) will be able to return to play in Week 9 on Sunday against the New York Giants, according to Nick Wagoner of ESPN. "It's too early to say. I don't think it's a long shot. We'll see how he's doing on Wednesday," Shanahan said. Purdy has made slow and steady progress since aggravating his turf-toe injury in the Week 4 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, but his status for this week remains up in the air.

In addition to Purdy's status, backup Mac Jones (knee) is dealing with a knee injury and is day-to-day this week. The 25-year-old Purdy will probably need to upgrade to a full practice this week to get the green light to return on Sunday against the Giants. San Fran's offense will receive a boost whenever Purdy can make his third start of the year, and he should immediately be on the low-end QB1 radar for fantasy football managers.

Lamar Jackson, Baltimore Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens are expecting quarterback Lamar Jackson (hamstring) to play on Thursday Night Football against the Miami Dolphins in Week 9, according to Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic. "I feel very confident about it. I expect him to be out there Thursday," head coach John Harbaugh said. Jackson has been out of action since straining his right hamstring in the Week 4 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

It was initially believed that the 28-year-old two-time MVP would be available coming out of the Week 7 bye, but Baltimore held him out for a third straight game this past weekend in the win over the Chicago Bears. But as long as he doesn't aggravate his hamstring in practice on a short week, it's looking like Jackson will play this week against a burnable Dolphins secondary. If Jackson is back on the field on Thursday night, he'll be a must-start in fantasy lineups.

Michael Penix Jr., Atlanta Falcons

Atlanta Falcons head coach Raheem Morris said on Monday that quarterback Michael Penix Jr. (knee) will be day-to-day this week, according to Terrin Waack of AtlantaFalcons.com. Penix suffered a bone bruise in his knee late in the Week 7 loss to the San Francisco 49ers and did not play in Sunday's upset loss to the visiting Miami Dolphins. Atlanta's offense didn't have any juice with both Penix and top receiver Drake London (hip) both inactive. Backup QB Kirk Cousins fell flat in his first start of 2025, throwing for only 173 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions against a soft Dolphins defense.

It's unclear if Penix will be able to return to action in Week 9 against the New England Patriots, and it will depend on how much he's able to do at practice this week. If Penix makes progress and returns on Sunday against the Pats, he'll be back in play as a midrange QB2 in fantasy football lineups.

Carson Wentz, Minnesota Vikings

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Carson Wentz (shoulder) will undergo season-ending surgery on his left shoulder and will be placed on Injured Reserve, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. To fill Wentz's spot on the active 53-man roster, the Vikings claimed tight end Ben Sims on waivers from the division-rival Green Bay Packers. The 32-year-old Wentz started the team's last five games with J.J. McCarthy working his way back from a high-ankle sprain that he suffered in the Week 2 loss to the Atlanta Falcons.

Wentz was in undeniable pain every time he was hit last Thursday night's loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, and now he won't play again this year. There were questions as to whether McCarthy would be ready to play in Week 9 against the division-rival Detroit Lions, but now that Wentz is out, the Vikes will be left with Max Brosmer if McCarthy isn't cleared to start this Sunday. Wentz finishes his 10th year in the NFL with 1,216 passing yards, six touchdowns, and five interceptions in his five starts.

Spencer Rattler, Tyler Shough, New Orleans Saints

The New Orleans Saints have not made a decision yet on who they will start at quarterback between Spencer Rattler and rookie Tyler Shough in Week 9 against the Los Angeles Rams, according to Mike Triplett of NewOrleans.Football. "We just got done closing the book on this Tampa Bay game. We'll now start beginning soon our plan for the Rams," head coach Kellen Moore said. The head coach said the move to bench Rattler for Shough in Sunday's loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was just about "trying to create a spark in that specific game."

Rattler went 15-for-21 passing for 136 yards, no touchdowns, and an interception on Sunday, and he now has four picks in the last two weeks after throwing one interception in the first six weeks. Shough wasn't much better against Tampa, going 17-for-30 for 128 yards, no TDs, and one pick. Whoever starts in Week 9 should be avoided for fantasy purposes against the Rams.
