2022 Wells Fargo Championship - PGA DFS Overview

The Course: TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm

Par 70 - 7,160 Yards, Greens: Bent, Designed By: Sneed, Clark, & Ault

While the Wells Fargo Championship is a staple event on the PGA Tour schedule, it won't be played at its usual host course, Quail Hollow, for this year's edition. With the President's Cup slated to tee it up at Quail Hollow later this year, the Wells Fargo makes a detour to TPC Potomac at Avenel Farms this week. We do have a bit of familiarity with this layout, as it hosted the 2017 & 2018 Quicken Loans events, which were won by Kyle Stanley & Francesco Molinari. Those Quicken leaderboards give us an indication of both what works and how tough this golf course is. Ball striking will be crucial this week, and I'm placing a premium both on hitting fairways and greens. Penal off the fairways and with just two Par-5s (only one is truly reachable in two), the "bombers" will likely take a back seat to players with games that feature precision and sharp ball-striking in their repertoires.

Fantasy Golf Lineup Picks for FanDuel (PGA DFS)

We have tons of great weekly PGA articles, DFS analysis, tools and DFS advice. Be sure to read our other fantastic articles regarding this week's event including DFS lineup picks for DraftKings/FanDuel, betting advice and DFS prop picks.

High-Priced FanDuel DFS Plays

Rory McIlroy ($12,100)

While this week's Wells Fargo field is undoubtedly deeper than what we saw in Mexico last week, there are some "one man at the top" parallels between Jon Rahm last week and Rory McIlroy on this slate. While McIlroy hasn't been quite as consistent as Rahm as of late, his talent and upside still dwarfs that of the others in this Wells Fargo field.

Rory flexed his muscles in the final round of the Masters by firing a Sunday 64 and it will be interesting to see if he carries any of that momentum into his first start since the year's first major championship. While the fit at TPC Potomac isn't as great as a Quail Hollow course on which he's won three times, there are still some reasons to believe McIlroy can find success at Avenel Farms. He's one of the best drivers of the golf ball in, well, history and he has historically smashed long Par-4s. He grades out first in this week's field in SG: Par-4s over his last 50 rounds, and more importantly, also ranks first in the key area of SG: Par-4s that measure 450-500 yards, of which he'll face six per round on this week's layout.

Corey Conners ($11,700)

Anytime a course demands elite ball-striking, Corey Conners' name jumps to the top of my list. That's once again the case this week, as the Canadian perfectly fits the mold of what's needed to succeed at TPC Potomac. He grades out second in this field in SG: Ball Striking over the last 50 rounds, third in SG: Par-4s, and eighth in SG: Par-4s measuring 450-500 yards. Conners checks almost every statistical box from T2G, including a standing of third in Good Drives Gained & fourth GIRs Gained. Of course, things aren't as rosy on the greens, as he ranks just 68th in the field in SG: Putting. However, solid outings with the flat stick at both the Masters and RBC Heritage, indicate that he could be heating up in that department. For what it's worth, Conners also has some familiarity with this course, as he posted a T41 in the 2018 Quicken Loans event while still finding his way on the PGA Tour. Overall, he's a no-brainer DFS option on this slate.

Russell Henley ($10,900)

Despite a disappointing missed cut in his most recent start at Hilton Head, I remain a Russell Henley "truther" until further notice. The UGA alum has been tremendous for an extended period of time, posting 11 top-10 finishes over the last two years. If we zoom in on 2022, he's gained strokes T2G in every start this year and has gained an average of 4.7 strokes T2G over his last 10 tournaments. Henley's iron play has been a revelation, as he grades out second in this Wells Fargo field in SG: Approach over the last 50 rounds. The veteran has also displayed a knack for scoring on long Par-4s, ranking fifth in SG: Par-4s measuring 450-500 yards.

Mid-Priced FanDuel DFS Plays

Max Homa ($10,600)

Max Homa's inclusion in my player pool this week is due to his overall excellence rather than one specific statistical category. Homa has shown an affinity for playing well on difficult golf courses, as his wins at Riviera and Quail Hollow confirm. Solid is the first word that comes to mind when describing the Cali native's season, as he scored a victory at the Fortinet Championship back in the fall and has continued to display rock-steady form throughout 2022 by posting top-25 finishes in five of his seven starts this calendar year. Homa ranks seventh in SG: Ball Striking over the last 24 rounds and grades out within the top-20 in this week's field in every major statistical T2G category over the same time frame.

Cameron Young ($10,100)

A superstar-in-the-making, Cameron Young will likely be a flavor of the week type of play for the Wells Fargo Championship. That expected popularity is for a reason though, as the rookie has quickly turned heads during his short time on the PGA Tour, with top-five finishes at both the Genesis and RBC Heritage since February, as well as impressive outings in elite events such as the Farmers (T20) and the API (T13). In a field that contains players such as Rory McIlroy, Corey Conners, and Tony Finau, it's Young that grades out first in SG: T2G & Ball Striking over the last 24 rounds. Pretty heady stuff.

Doug Ghim ($9,600)

When we see that Kyle Stanley is a former winner on this golf course, it's time to start scouring the "Team No Putt" roster. Doug Ghim is in our starting five, as the former collegiate superstar continues to thrive from tee to green at the professional level, but consistently looks lost on the greens. Ghim has gained strokes Ball Striking in each of his last five starts but has unsurprisingly lost strokes putting in four of those outings, with a T6 at The Players Championship being the lone exception. His ineptitude with the putter isn't a great thing, of course, but I am willing to lay putting aside this week in favor of excellence from T2G, and Ghim has routinely exhibited his ball-striking ability as of late. We're forced to evaluate the possibility of outliers when building GPP lineups and there's always the (slim) chance that he has a spike week with the putter.

Low-Priced FanDuel DFS Players

Anirban Lahiri ($9,000)

Lahiri is trying hard to make the case that his amazing runner-up result at The Players Championship was no fluke. He's looked sharp since TPC Sawgrass and has recorded top-15 results in two of his three subsequent starts, including a T15 last week in Mexico. He brings those positive vibes to a TPC Potomac layout that he's familiar with. Lahiri recorded a T13 in the 2018 Quicken Loans event at Avenel Farm. That course experience, coupled with his rejuvenated ball-striking, puts him squarely into the salary-saver discussion for me on this slate.

Nate Lashley ($8,800)

I was on board Nate Lashley in a big way last week in Mexico and I don't see much reason to jump ship. The journeyman came through with a strong T11 at Vidanta - despite being stuck in neutral in the final round - and has now logged top-20 finishes in four of his last six starts. Lashley grades out 29th in this field in SG: Ball Striking over the last 12 rounds while ranking 16th in SG: Approach. He's a solid statistical fit at TPC Potomac, where Par-4 scoring will be crucial, as he stands eighth in overall SG: Par-4s and 16th in Par-4s measuring between 450-500 yards.
