ANALYSIS: Miami Marlins top pitching prospect Eury Perez is making his long-awaited major-league debut Friday. The 20-year-old was called up from Double-A Pensacola on Wednesday, bypassing Triple-A.
He has been almost unhittable this season. In six starts with Pensacola this season, Perez has a 2.32 ERA with a 35.9% strikeout rate, a 7.7% walk rate, and a .148 opponent batting average.
Perez had a seemingly poor 2022 season in Double-A, with a 4.08 ERA in 17 starts. However, he was dealing with a right shoulder issue, which likely explains his struggles. In a three-game stretch in late July to early August, Perez allowed 13 runs in 11 innings, a 10.64 ERA across three starts. Following the last start in that stretch, he was put on the IL for a month because of a lingering right shoulder issue.
Standing at an imposing 6’8”, Perez pumps gas. His elite fastball touches triple-digit velocities and is lethal when mixed with his 90 mph changeup. He also possesses a plus curveball and a plus slider.
His promotion from Double-A to the majors shows the front office’s confidence in the 20-year-old. But despite his young age, Perez’s command is elite and well above the levels of most his age and size.
Pitchers of his size generally struggle with command, but scouts praise Perez for it. His 65% strike rate this season would rank in the upper echelon of MLB pitchers, and considering how unhittable his stuff is, that bodes well for the future.
His main fantasy appeal is his high-strikeout ceiling as a starter. He’s fourth in strikeouts in the Southern League this season, with 20 strikeouts in the past two games. He possesses a career 35% K rate in the minor leagues. For reference, current major-league strikeout leader Spencer Strider had a 39.3% K rate, and Strider is looking like a generational talent in that regard.
He may not be lights-out in his first few starts, but there are few people on this planet with his potential on the mound. Roster Eury Perez if he’s available.
