Danny Duffy Could Head To Bullpen In 2019

What the Kansas City Royals are going to do with ace starting pitcher Danny Duffy seems to be a bit of a conundrum at this point. Duffy is expected to start the season on the Injured List due to his ongoing shoulder injury, but when he does return, it's not even clear that he'll be headed back to the rotation. The 30-year-old is under contract through 2021 at $13 million per year because the team had tapped him to be their ace, but now he and general manager Dayton Moore have both acknowledged that he may be headed to the bullpen instead. KC was one of the first teams to open up everyone's eyes to the value of transitioning a starter when they moved Wade Davis there years ago, but this seems like a surprising move for a team that has no other dependable starting pitchers. In the meantime, it could possibly crater Duffy's mixed-league value depending on exactly how he was used.
