Tight End (TE) Rankings Analysis

By Zach Wilkens (@LopsidedTrades)

Undervalued Fantasy Football Tight Ends (TE)

Julius Thomas is one guy I like more than the consensus at TE7. There are definitely reasons to shy away from Thomas--he only managed 489 receiving yards last year with Peyton Manning throwing to him, for one. The fact remains that he is an incredible red zone threat, with 24 touchdowns over his last 27 games the past two seasons. I think that red zone ability can carry over to Jacksonville despite the major downgrade at quarterback and overall offense.

Vernon Davis is another guy I’m not totally down on. He was mostly invisible last year, there’s no denying that. However, I still remember the five previous years when he had four top ten seasons, three of which were actually top three seasons. I don’t think we’ve seen the last of Davis just yet.

Overvalued Fantasy Football Tight Ends (TE)

I’m being cautious with Josh Hill in 2015. He’s definitely flashed his ability to catch touchdowns in a small sample size, but he isn’t even a guarantee to beat out aging veteran Benjamin Watson for the starting job. Before Jimmy Graham arrived in New Orleans, tight ends were never emphasized in Sean Payton’s offenses. It’s very possible a majority of Jimmy Graham’s targets move to the wide receivers and running backs, which we’ve seen in the past with New Orleans.

Another player I am low on is Dwayne Allen. While I like Dwayne Allen as a player, it’s hard to see him having a really strong season. His eight touchdowns last year were nice for fantasy owners but I don’t see him as a premier touchdown threat like Thomas or Graham, as he’s shorter and far less athletic. From a statistical standpoint, he averaged just over two catches and 30 yards per game in 2014. His production reminds me more of Kyle Rudolph in 2012, who put up nine touchdowns with little yardage, and hasn't done much since (mostly due to injuries).
