Week 6 Fantasy Football Tight End Outlooks

Terrance Ferguson, Los Angeles Rams

Despite limited playing time early on in his rookie season, Los Angeles Rams tight end Terrance Ferguson has earned a more significant role in the team's offense. The University of Oregon product has had a slow start to the season after battling a groin injury in training camp. While he's only appeared on the field for eight total snaps across two contests, head coach Sean McVay has taken note of his development and intends to get him more involved in the offense.

"We have to be able to figure out a way to be able to get him going," said McVay. "He's going to be a really good player for us, I believe. I thought he did an excellent job with the opportunity that he had [last week]." Ferguson is firmly fourth in LA's TE pecking order, but it wouldn't be surprising to see him pick up more playing time moving forward. It remains to be seen if he'll become a viable play in redraft leagues this season, but he's an excellent stash in dynasty formats.

Evan Engram, Denver Broncos

Denver Broncos tight end Evan Engram found the end zone for the first time this season in Week 5, but his overall production remains underwhelming. Through five games, Engram has caught 12 of 19 targets for 95 yards and a touchdown while struggling to carve out a consistent role in Denver's offense. Engram continues to split reps with Adam Trautman and Nate Adkins, limiting his snap share to just 41%, which ranks 56th among all tight ends.

He also ranks 30th in route participation (53.9%) and 27th in fantasy points per game, highlighting his diminished opportunity in Sean Payton's offense. The Broncos face the New York Jets in Week 6, who have allowed the sixth most fantasy points to tight ends this season, but until Engram's usage increases, he's best left on the waiver wire in most formats.

Jake Tonges, San Francisco 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers will spend at least one more week without star tight end George Kittle (hamstring), which opens the door for backup Jake Tonges to continue being a streaming option with his team set for a plus matchup against the Tampa Bay Bucs. The fourth-year man from Cal hasn't been an exact 1:1 replacement for Kittle's do-it-all skill set, but he's done well as a pass catcher, ranking in the top 10 among fantasy tight ends thanks to 19 receptions and three touchdowns in five weeks.

Though Tonges' workload is going to decrease as soon as Kittle comes back, Tonges tied for the team lead in targets last week. He'll carry lineup appeal into Week 6, especially in formats that play more than one tight end.

Brock Bowers, Las Vegas Raiders

As expected, Las Vegas Raiders tight end Brock Bowers (knee) is not practicing on Wednesday, according to Ryan McFadden of ESPN. Bowers suffered an injury to his PCL in the season opener but then played through Week 4. The 22-year-old second-year player was inactive for Sunday's blowout loss to the Indianapolis Colts. With a third straight DNP, dating back to last week, Bowers is in danger of missing a second straight contest this Sunday when the Raiders take on the Tennessee Titans.

The good news for the Raiders is that TE Michael Mayer (concussion) has cleared concussion protocol and could be on track to return after missing the last two games with his head injury. Bowers is going to need to practice on either Thursday or Friday to have a shot at suiting up in Week 6. If Bowers is inactive and Mayer returns, Mayer will be on the TE2 streaming radar in a great matchup.

Ja'Tavion Sanders, Carolina Panthers

Carolina Panthers tight end Ja'Tavion Sanders (ankle) is healthy and resumed practicing on Wednesday ahead of the team's Week 6 matchup with the Dallas Cowboys. Sanders has started all three games he's played this season, catching 11 of 14 targets while proving to be a reliable option in the passing game.

His return provides a noticeable upgrade over Tommy Tremble and should help stretch the field for big-play receiver Tetairoa McMillan. With both Sanders and Xavier Legette back in action, the Panthers' offense appears poised to continue its recent surge after winning two of their last three games. Fantasy managers in deeper leagues should keep an eye on Sanders as a potential streaming option if his involvement continues to grow.

Michael Mayer, Las Vegas Raiders

Las Vegas Raiders head coach Pete Carroll said that tight end Michael Mayer (concussion) has cleared the league's concussion protocol and was a full-go in practice on Wednesday, per Ryan McFadden of ESPN. Mayer has missed the last two games with a concussion, but he appears to be on track to return this Sunday to face the Tennessee Titans in Week 6.

The Raiders' TE corps was especially thin in the Week 5 blowout loss to the Indianapolis Colts, with Brock Bowers (knee) also inactive. Mayer isn't really on the fantasy radar when Bowers is healthy, but if Mayer returns this weekend and Bowers misses a second straight game, the 24-year-old would be on the TE2 streaming radar. In three games this year before suffering his head injury, Mayer was minimally involved, catching six of his seven targets for 47 yards and no touchdowns.
