Fantasy Football Waiver Wire Outlooks

Some of the top names include Kenneth Gainwell, Chris Rodriguez, Kareem Hunt, Isaiah Likely and Calvin Austin. We recap why these players should be on your waiver wire radar for Week 4.

Kenneth Gainwell, RB, Steelers

Pittsburgh Steelers running back Kenneth Gainwell scored his first touchdown of the season last week and will look to build on that momentum against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 4. Minnesota has been strong against the run, allowing the 10th-fewest fantasy points and just one total touchdown to opposing backs this year.

While the matchup doesn't set up favorably for Gainwell, Jaylen Warren (knee) is questionable, which could open the door for additional opportunities. Warren is expected to suit up in Ireland, but it's unclear if he will receive a full workload.

Although Gainwell logged his lowest snap share of the season in Week 3, he could return to the 40-50% range he held over the first two weeks if Warren is limited. If Warren is surprisingly ruled out, Gainwell would rise to back-end RB2 territory, but for now, he's best viewed as a desperation flex play.

Chris Rodriguez, RB, Commanders

Washington Commanders running back Chris Rodriguez Jr. led the backfield in carries last week against the Raiders and ran well overall, gaining 39 yards on 11 rushes. His role for Week 4 against Atlanta could look similar. In the team's first game without Austin Ekeler, Rodriguez surprisingly started at running back and began with four straight carries to begin the game.

The rotation afterwards was a bit sporadic, with Rodriguez and Jacory Croskey-Merritt both splitting most of the work, and then Jeremy McNichols subbed in on pass downs and handled a few touches. The situation remains very fluid in Washington's backfield, and it could remain unclear for the coming weeks.

Rodriguez is set up as the hammer back who can grind out tough yardage, and he tied Croskey-Merritt with two goal-line carries last week. There is upside for a touchdown plunge for Rodriguez in Week 4.

Kareem Hunt, RB, Chiefs

Kansas City Chiefs running back Kareem Hunt will take on the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday in Week 4. Hunt handled 10 carries for 34 yards and a touchdown as well as one catch for 10 yards in last week's 22-9 win over the New York Giants. Hunt has continued to receive a nearly identical workload to Isiah Pacheco, but Hunt has averaged two more PPR points per game this season.

The 29-year-old has been the preferred back on passing downs and short-yardage situations, putting him in position to catch passes and score goal-line touchdowns. Hunt has been inefficient on the ground, averaging just 3.5 yards per carry, but he could improve that average this week against Baltimore. The Ravens have allowed the most fantasy points to opposing running backs this season, making this the most advantageous matchup at the position.

The Ravens also have the highest scoring offense this season, which should put the Chiefs in more passing situations. Hunt is ranked RB34 in our RotoBaller Half-PPR rankings, putting him two spots ahead of Pacheco and in the RB3/Flex conversation. If Hunt can catch multiple passes and handle goal-line touches again, he could finish the week with double-digit fantasy points.

Isaiah Likely, TE, Ravens

Baltimore Ravens tight end Isaiah Likely (foot) is listed as questionable for Sunday's tilt against the Kansas City Chiefs. However, the young tight end was able to log a full practice during Friday's final session, which is a great sign for his ability. Earlier in the week, Likely logged two straight limited sessions.

Fantasy managers should continue to keep a close eye on his status. Likey has been sidelined throughout the first three games of the campaign while recovering from foot surgery. Last season, Likely caught a career-high 42 passes for 477 yards and six touchdowns.

However, even if Likely were to turn the corner and make his season debut this weekend, fantasy managers should expect him to continue to operate as the No. 2 tight end behind veteran Mark Andrews, which significantly lowers his fantasy projection.

Calvin Austin, WR, Steelers

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Calvin Austin III is off to a promising start this season but faces an uphill battle against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 4. The Vikings have been the toughest matchup for opposing wideouts through three games, surrendering just 25 receptions and one touchdown to the position.

Austin has only eight catches this year, but he's made the most of them with 126 yards and two scores. His early chemistry with new quarterback Aaron Rodgers has been encouraging, yet he is still far from a reliable fantasy starter.

With a low projected point total, Sunday's contest in Ireland isn't the ideal spot to roll the dice on high-upside, low-floor players. Austin remains a worthwhile stash in all leagues but should only be considered as a flex option in the deepest of redraft formats.
