Will Chris Godwin play in Week 2 for fantasy football? Is Chris Godwin injured or hurt heading into Week 2 of 2025? Read the latest Chris Godwin injury report.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin (ankle) suffered a season-ending injury in Week 7 of last season. His leg was awkwardly pinned under an opposing defender during a tackle, and unfortunately, he dislocated his ankle on the play.
He's since had surgery, and has been gradually working his way back to health. He wasn't able to play in Week 1, when the Bucs narrowly defeated the Atlanta Falcons in their season opener. But as the weeks go by, Godwin is improving slowly.
He's a crucial component of his team's passing attack, and was just signed to a contract extension before this season, so it's clear that he'll have a role when he returns. But when will he make it back on to the field? Let's dive in to a Godwin injury update for Week 2 of 2025.

Chris Godwin Fantasy Football Injury Update
Godwin, after being ruled out ahead of Week 1, is now listed as "Doubtful" on the team's injury report for Week 2. While the team expressed optimism at his potential return soon, they also had previously stated that Week 5 was a realistic goal for his 2025 debut.
Good news for the #Bucs: Star WR Chris Godwin is expected to practice today for the first time and he’ll be limited. Part of his return to play process, but a very good sign. pic.twitter.com/YBq4HEFGt1

The good sign is that he recently returned to practice, on September 11, albeit in a limited fashion. And his designation being switched from "Out" to the aforementioned "Doubtful" indicates that his return is imminent, likely within the next few weeks.
Is Chris Godwin Playing in Week 2?
There's very little chance he plays. Players with "Doubtful" designations rarely take the field, and when recovering from a season-ending injury, it doesn't make much sense to rush players back onto the field. Godwin likely needs more time to recover.
While his injury was reported as just a dislocated ankle, there's a chance there were some fractures within the bone structure, or perhaps strained or torn ligaments. Godwin's foot, after being pinned underneath a defender, snapped sideways and remained that way.
Chris Godwin Fantasy Football Outlook for Week 2
In the very slim chance that Godwin does play, he's unlikely to be much of a fantasy asset. He just returned to practice, and still needs time to build chemistry with his quarterback, Baker Mayfield. The team also has a new offense, run by first-year offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard, that Godwin will need to get accustomed to.
Really cool design from Tampa Bay Buccaneers new OC Josh Grizzard
1. WR in motion as potential open field blocker
2. Fake pitch
3. Graham Barton pulls from left tackle
4. Center and Right Tackle advance to second level
5. Ball in the hands of Emeka Egbuka in space pic.twitter.com/PDGWzbsVU9— Jacob Gibbs (@jagibbs_23) September 11, 2025
Grizzard's offense is still very new, and though he'll likely be borrowing many concepts from Tampa Bay's OC last season, Liam Coen, there are some wrinkles we probably haven't seen yet. It might be difficult to live up to Coen's abilities, but the Bucs' offensive roster is in a very good place.
Moving forward, Godwin should work his way back into being in at least the WR2 conversation, but Tampa did spend a first-round pick on WR Emeka Egbuka, who was targeted six times and caught two touchdowns in his pro debut. That, combined with Godwin's injury issues, should lower his ceiling and floor appreciably when he does return.
