Recent Fantasy Football Quarterback News

Caleb Williams, Chicago Bears

Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson said that his starters, including second-year quarterback Caleb Williams, will play in the second preseason game on Sunday night against the Buffalo Bills. Williams and most of the Bears' starters did not see any action in the preseason opener against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.

The 33-year-old former first overall pick in 2024 was up and down in his first NFL season and mostly disappointed, and the Bears' passing attack has struggled in training camp practices in Johnson's first year as the head coach. Williams has plenty of weapons at his disposal and should be better off in Johnson's offense, but he will need to cut down on sacks taken and improve his accuracy to take the next step. The jury is still out on Williams, but he's worth taking as a high-end QB2 with upside if he clicks with Johnson.

Cam Ward, Tennessee Titans

Atlanta Falcons reporter Joe Patrick of 929 The Game writes that Tennessee Titans rookie first-round quarterback Cameron Ward looked much better in joint practice with the Falcons on Wednesday and was taking more of what was available underneath while still connecting on some deep shots. Unexpectedly, the first overall pick in this year's NFL draft has been up and down during training camp and in the preseason opener last week against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The 23-year-old Miami product went 5-for-8 for 67 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions against the Bucs in the two drives that he played over the weekend. Most importantly, Ward continues to show a strong connection with receiver Calvin Ridley, who will no doubt be his favorite target in 2025. Ward is a much better long-term gamble in dynasty leagues than he will be in redraft formats for fantasy football.

Shedeur Sanders, Cleveland Browns

Cleveland Browns rookie fifth-rounder Shedeur Sanders (oblique) suffered an oblique injury in Wednesday's training camp practice and was held out the rest of the way, according to the team. It's unclear exactly how serious Sanders' oblique injury is, but with both Kenny Pickett and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel managing hamstring injuries in the last week-plus, the Browns' QB depth has thinned out considerably.

The Browns were expected to start Sanders for a second straight week in this Saturday's preseason contest against the Eagles if both Pickett and Gabriel remain out, but they may have to go back to the drawing board now. If Cleveland wants to hold veteran Joe Flacco, the favorite for Week 1 starting duties out again, Tyler Huntley might be forced to play most of Saturday's contest. Sanders looked good in the preseason opener, but he still isn't a realistic starting candidate for the Browns.

Justin Fields, New York Jets

New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields has been "mostly playing it safe" in the passing game in practices, according to Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic. Rosenblatt notes that Fields has been throwing a lot of "quick slants, dump-offs, (and) screens." Fields set a career-high in air yards per pass attempt (7.21) in 10 games last season for the Pittsburgh Steelers, but has typically been more comfortable checking down to underneath targets than most mobile quarterbacks.

If the Jets' plan is for Fields to get the ball out of his hands quickly, it could benefit running back Breece Hall's reception totals. It could also remove some chances for Fields to make plays in scramble situations. A good portion of Fields' fantasy value comes from his legs (career 50.2 rushing yards per game).

Jordan Love, Green Bay Packers

Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst said that quarterback Jordan Love (thumb) is undergoing a procedure to fix a ligament issue in his left thumb, per ESPN's Rob Demovsky. Gutekunst says the hope is that Love will return to practice next week, and that the injury is not expected to affect him long-term or impact his Week 1 availability. The good news for both Packers fans and fantasy managers is that the injury is on Love's non-throwing hand, but this is still something to monitor throughout the remainder of the preseason.

Love profiles as a mid-to-low-end QB2 in fantasy who needs passing volume to be a consistent contributor. If he were to miss time, Malik Willis would be the favorite to step in at quarterback in Green Bay, which would significantly impact the fantasy outlook of the Packers' pass-catchers.

Michael Penix Jr., Atlanta Falcons

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. will not play in the team's second preseason game on Friday, per ESPN's Marc Raimondi. Backup quarterback Kirk Cousins is also unlikely to play, although it has not been completely ruled out by the team. Neither Penix Jr. nor Cousins played in Atlanta's first preseason game against the Detroit Lions last Friday, leaving Easton Stick and Emory Jones to handle signal-calling duties. Penix Jr. has a long injury history dating back to his time in college, so it makes sense why the team would want to be cautious with him in the preseason despite his limited NFL experience as a starter (three games).
