Kyle Larson Fastest at Martinsville But Not When It Mattered

Kyle Larson won his second consecutive pole at Martinsville yesterday and led the entire first stage without being passed, but was unable to convert that into a race victory. On the stage break caution on lap 86, he took four tires while Joey Logano took two and Larson couldn't make it back to the lead despite consistently running in the top five for the remainder of the race. Although he seemed poised to finish third, Larson passed his teammate, Chase Elliott, for second on the overtime restart but had nothing for his other teammate, William Byron. Larson had the fastest average speed in the race and led the most laps in regulation before Byron overtook him in laps led on the race's penultimate lap. It was a strong run for Larson, but clearly his car was faster at the start of the race than the end.
