New York Islanders goaltender Semyon Varlamov has resumed skating as he works his way back from a lower-body injury, according to head coach Lane Lambert. The veteran left a Jan. 2 game against the Colorado Avalanche after just 14:52 due to the injury and has not appeared since. The ailment interrupted what has been a nice season for the 35-year-old who sports a 2.78 goals-against average and a .918 save percentage across 14 appearances (13 starts), going 6-4-2 in that time. His 6.03 goals saved above average ranks 17th of 68 qualified goaltenders, as per Hockey Reference. Not only has Ilya Sorokin started all seven games so far in Varlamov's absence, the Russian netminder has made 12 consecutive starts while backup Ken Appleby has yet to see any game action.--Brenton Kemp
