Every racecar driver dreams to make it to the NASCAR Cup Series one day. That day for Carson Hocevar was Sunday, June 4, 2023. He was behind the wheel of the No. 7 Spire Chevrolet, filling in for Corey LaJoie. LaJoie was driving the No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet for the suspended Chase Elliott. Hocevar qualified 26th for the Enjoy Illinois 300, but he was not going to spoil his debut by staying there. After feeling out the car for Stage 1 by finishing where he started, he managed to move up in Stage 2. He was running as high as 16th when trouble ensued just before Lap 91. He came on the radio to say the brakes were going out, and shortly after coming into Turn 1, the brake rotor broke. He managed to drive the car into the wall to avoid additional damage. It was not the ending he was hoping for, but he was grateful for the experience and should get another chance in the future.--Eric DeWilde
