Spencer Aguiar's First-Round Leader Picks for the ZOZO Championship

Spencer Aguiar digs into the first-round leader market at the ZOZO Championship, providing some of his favorite targets on the slate.

Enjoy this article for free until the start of 2023!

We have a lot of exciting new concepts in store for everyone at RotoBaller over the upcoming months, so please stay tuned for updates as we get closer to the new year. Thanks again for all the support, and we look forward to continuing to provide our readers with top-notch statistical information for you to consider.

Make sure to follow me on Twitter @Teeoffsports to get my updated picks as the tournament progresses, and if you don't have that as one of your social media platforms, here is a link for my betting card weekly. My free DFS column, which includes my top plays for the week and a list of options I will be fading, can be found here. And if you ever have any questions about a particular bet, player in the field or anything golf-related, be sure to contact me on Twitter.

First-Round Leader Options To Consider:

Si Woo Kim 40/1 (DraftKings)

When we are looking for actual win equity in this tournament, Si Woo Kim came close to making my card if I didn't take such an aggressive approach up top, but let's slide him into the first-round market and try to attack him as a golfer with high-end marks in multiple facets of the handicapping process.

Kim ranked as one of only eight players to grade inside the top 22 in all three par ranges (three, four and five), and his combination of moderate course history and great current form should be viewed as a massive perk toward his chances to walk out of Narashino victorious. We aren't going to need all of that upside for this particular wager, but Kim is my top choice to lead after day one and will be bet as such when it comes to my unit distribution.

Mito Pereira 40/1 (Bet365)

We came close to hitting our Mito Pereira first-round leader bet last weekend in Las Vegas, and I will go back to the well with him at the ZOZO Championship.

Pereira ranks 13th in my model for weighted proximity, 10th in off-the-tee + approach, which is a fancy way I combined ball-striking and proximity totals, 10th in bogey avoidance, 10th in weighted par-four and fifth in strokes gained total over what equates to a 56-week sample size. His inability to close out these events is one of the reasons I am sitting on the sidelines until I see something change in that section of his game, but the one-day approach continues to be a unique way to get exposure to his upside.

Sebastian Munoz 40/1 (DraftKings)

We have a reduced field with two of the first-round leader monarchs (Sebastian Munoz and Keegan Bradley) entered into the contest. And while I did try to figure out a way to gain exposure to both, the makeup of my card made me decide on only one of the options, and I settled on Munoz as the true king of the market.

The Columbian has been brilliant throughout his career on these short Par 70 tests that possess difficult-to-hit fairways, and the weighted proximity to mimic Narshino Country Club places him eight spots better than my expected total on a random course. My reasoning here stems from his ability to get hot for a round, but the positive trajectory for this particular venue only heightens my belief in his potential.

Aaron Rai 60/1 (Bet365)

There are a couple of big movers this week when it comes to jumping up my model for a course-specific outlook, but the following three names were deemed the three long shots with the best chance of getting the job done in Japan. For reference sake, John Huh, Cameron Champ, Martin Laird, Joel Dahmen, Kevin Streelman, Adam Svennson and Adam Long were all close to cracking this territory themselves, but let's start with why I chose Aaron Rai at 60/1.

Rai's combination of how he has historically performed on Par 70s that have both difficult-to-hit fairways and complex scoring outputs has propelled him into being one of only three golfers priced 100/1 pre-event to crack the top-15 in expectation on this course for day one. The other two options are Adam Svensson and Cameron Champ, but the reason Rai made this card over his counterparts came down to the complete totality of his metrics and not a cherry-picked data point. The ball-striking totals are elite; the putting has been neutral to his expectation level and the driving accuracy places him in a range where he should be able to take advantage of his driver with his long iron play.

Rickie Fowler 60/1 (DraftKings)

I watched Rickie Fowler in person on Thursday at the Shriners Open. Well...to be fair, I watched Jason Day, and Fowler just so happened to be in the desert after every shot he hit to hold up the greatest golfer who has ever lived, but that dynamic, vibrant demeanor of magical production was back in spurts throughout his round.

I don't have much faith in Fowler's ability to maintain that level throughout four days, but the numbers do like his upside, and the game is streaky enough to pop on the leaderboard for a round on Thursday.

Alex Smalley 80/1 (Bet365)

I am a glutton for punishment when betting Alex Smalley for every first-round leader card. It is the one bet I never miss but also never hit, although I will continue to trust the numbers that tell me he is a high-upside golfer that can get hot for a round or two. Maybe the lack of par-five scoring makes him better suited to try this wager at an actual Par 70 test that only generates two chances, but removing one is good enough for me to take a swing for the fence at an extended price of 80/1.
