MacKenzie Gore 2022 Outlook: Enigma With Big Upside
The 2020 and 2021 seasons were not kind to Gore. Like every other prospect in baseball, he lost a full year of development due to the pandemic and then saw his stuff take a huge step backward while dealing with inconsistencies quite possibly caused by undisclosed health issues. Pre-2020, Gore was one of the top arms in the minors and looked like a future ace. Post-2021, it's impossible to know what version of the young pitcher is going to show up — with many fearing that he's the next Forrest Whitley. When healthy, Gore has shown above-average velocity and at least four offerings with above-average potential. His command has always been inconsistent but his control was good — until last season. With a strong track record of success, the hope is that Gore will come back refreshed and healthy in 2022. He may open the year back in Double-A to allow him to slowly ease back in but he has the talent to move quickly and could be a key addition to the big league club for the second half of the year.
