The San Francisco Giants are getting very close to having an excellent staff of veteran starting pitchers finally assembled for the first time.

Both Robbie Ray and Alex Cobb are inching closer to returning from major injuries to join a pitching staff with Logan Webb and Blake Snell on it. Cobb and Webb have been Giants for a while, but Ray and Snell were brought in this year as free agents to try to bolster the Giants' rotation.

Robbie Ray hasn't made a big league start since his first and only start of the 2023 season with Seattle and is coming off Tommy John surgery.

Robbie Ray Injury Update for Fantasy Baseball

The 32-year-old Ray was a Cy Young winner with Toronto back in 2021 and had a solid year for Seattle in 2022 before blowing his arm out in March of last year.

Ray was often inconsistent during his time in Arizona, flashing great strikeout ability but also giving up a lot of hard contact and home runs.

He seemed to figure things out in Toronto and had a spectacular Spring Training in 2023 for Seattle before he suffered the injury.

Ray is a hard-throwing lefty with a plus slider and had started introducing a split-finger pitch that would help complement his fastball.

So far, his rehab starts in the minors have gone well and he looked like his old self in his most recent outing, striking out nine hitters over five innings and working his pitch count up to 74.

Robbie Ray Fantasy Baseball Outlook

Ray is rostered in 34% percentage of Yahoo! leagues but that number is growing quickly. There is no official word yet, but the Giants are expected to activate him as soon as later this week.

His velocity is back up around 95 on his heater and he has the secondary pitches he needs to pair with his fastball to be effective.

Ray is a veteran who has been an innings eater and strikeout stalwart during the second half of his career. He should be added in all formats and has the potential to be a difference-maker for fantasy squads in the second half.
