When Will Mike Trout, Logan Gilbert, Tyler O'Neill Return? Fantasy Baseball Injury Update

Mike Trout - Fantasy Baseball Rankings, MLB Injury News, DFS Picks

When will Mike Trout, Logan Gilbert, and Tyler O'Neill return and play? Will Trout, Gilbert, and O'Neill be back again this season? Read the latest fantasy baseball injury updates and return date for Week 6 of the 2025 MLB season.

One of the worst things about fantasy baseball is all the injuries. Unfortunately, there are plenty of big-name players currently on the injured list. Players like George Kirby, Sean Manaea, Ronald Acuna Jr., Grayson Rodriguez, Tyler Glasnow, and Blake Snell are all dealing with different injuries to start the season.

Three more players to add to that list are Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout, Seattle Mariners starting pitcher Logan Gilbert, and Baltimore Orioles outfielder Tyler O'Neill. These three players are rostered in almost every fantasy league but currently find themselves on the IL heading into Week 6 of the fantasy baseball season.

So, when will Trout, Gilbert, and O'Neill return? Should we expect them back in May? Let's dive in and find out.

Be sure to check all of our fantasy baseball lineup tools and resources:

Mike Trout Injury Update For Fantasy Baseball

It has been a couple of injury-riddled seasons for Trout. He has played over 85 games just once over the past four years and only appeared in 266 games for the Angels from 2021 to 2024. While the future Hall of Famer has done everything possible to try and stay healthy, he can't seem to stay on the field.

Trout recently suffered a bone bruise trying to beat out a groundball on April 30 against the Seattle Mariners. Although the Angels hoped his injury didn't turn into an IL stint, the team officially placed the veteran on the 10-day IL on May 2 (retroactive to May 1). This now marks his sixth time on the IL since the start of the 2021 season.

The good news, though, is that Trout isn't expected to miss a ton of time with this injury. The three-time American League MVP is already feeling better and could be activated from the IL once his 10 days are up. He is first eligible to come off the IL on May 11. If the veteran isn't activated right away, fantasy managers can expect his return shortly after that date.

As a result, Trout should be kept in one of your IL slots for the time being. He should return to the field sometime next week and will remain a strong fantasy option for managers moving forward. Even though the 33-year-old is hitting just .179 in the early going, his nine home runs are certainly a positive sign for him.

Those home run numbers should only continue for Trout, considering his expected slugging (.577), barrel rate (16.7%), and launch angle sweet-spot rate (44.4%) all rank in the 92nd percentile or better to begin the year. That means a 40-home run campaign is surely in the cards for him in his 15th major league season.

Logan Gilbert Injury Update For Fantasy Baseball

Gilbert entered the 2025 season as one of the most durable arms in baseball. He had started at least 32 games in three straight years while pitching at least 185 innings in all three campaigns. That alone made the right-hander one of the best pitchers to target early in 2025 fantasy baseball drafts.

However, Gilbert landed on the IL for the first time in his career after exiting his start early against the Miami Marlins on April 25. The Mariners pitcher left that contest due to right forearm tightness and was immediately placed on the 15-day IL one day later.

Given that he has never missed a start in his major league career, his stint on the IL was a bit concerning.

Seattle got some encouraging news, though, following Gilbert's MRI. He only suffered a Grade 1 right elbow flexor strain, which some would say is the best-case scenario. While the right-hander will still miss a handful of starts, his injury could have been a lot worse.

Although it has only been 10 days since he went on the 15-day IL, Gilbert is already making significant progress in his recovery. He started throwing on Sunday, and there is some optimism that he could return before the end of the month.

Mariners president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto said he is "hopeful" that the right-hander will be back in the next few weeks.

So, Gilbert should remain in one of your IL slots until he is activated. The 28-year-old has become one of the best pitchers in the game and was off to an excellent start before his injury. He had a 2.37 ERA, a 0.791 WHIP, and 44 strikeouts across 30 1/3 innings pitched to begin the 2025 season. The right-hander should return to the mound within the next month.

Tyler O'Neill Injury Update For Fantasy Baseball

O'Neill has gotten off to a rough start in his first season with the Baltimore Orioles. The slugging outfielder is hitting just .215 with two home runs, three doubles, and 10 RBI across 18 games this year. He also had just three hits across 36 at-bats over a 10-game span from April 9 to April 23 before landing on the 10-day injured list soon after that rough stretch.

O'Neill was officially placed on the IL on April 26 (retroactive to April 24) due to neck inflammation. It isn't clear at what point the 29-year-old injured his neck, but his injury was severe enough to land him a trip to the injured list.

The Orioles outfielder has had a hard time staying healthy in his major league career and has failed to play over 100 games in two of the past three seasons. Although he appeared in 113 games for the Red Sox in 2024, O'Neill landed on the 10-day IL on three different occasions. He suffered a concussion in April, dealt with a knee injury in May, and had a leg infection in August.

So, it's not a surprise to see O'Neill already hurt to start the season. However, the veteran should be activated off the IL in the next few days. Orioles general manager Mike Elias said on Friday that the outfielder's return is "days" away.

That means O'Neill could return to the lineup sometime this week. His bat will be much needed for the Orioles, considering they have struggled offensively for most of the season. Upon his return, he should see plenty of playing time in the outfield.

O'Neill, though, should really only be rostered in some 12-plus team leagues once he is activated. While his home run numbers would be a nice boost for fantasy teams, he doesn't really contribute much in any other categories. The 29-year-old hit .241 with 31 home runs, 18 doubles, 61 RBI, and four stolen bases across 113 games last season.

If you are in need of some power in your lineups, O'Neill should then be kept in one of your IL spots. The slugger has hit over 30 home runs in two of the past four seasons.
