Dynasty Fantasy Football QB Trade Targets

J.J. McCarthy, Minnesota Vikings

McCarthy missed his entire rookie year in 2024 after tearing his meniscus in training camp.

Following McCarthy’s injury, Sam Darnold became Minnesota’s de facto QB1 and had an incredible 2024. He threw for a career-high 4,319 yards and 35 passing touchdowns but came crashing down to earth in the season’s final two games.

Minnesota subsequently decided not to re-sign Darnold, allowing him to walk into free agency. McCarthy had to survive a brief scare that future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers would join Minnesota. However, that storm has passed, and the Vikings have confirmed they are committed to McCarthy for the 2025 season.

McCarthy's status is uncertain since he missed his entire rookie season. However, he is still a quarterback with top-10 draft capital tied to a strong offensive coach and surrounded by an abundance of talent. It's hard to find a better situation for a first-time starting quarterback.

Yes, we don't know McCarthy's true floor, and he could hurt your team if he's truly awful. But he might also have a higher ceiling than some people think. Head coach Kevin O'Connell worked wonders for Darnold's career last year. Considering McCarthy's, it shouldn't be that surprising if he has similar production.

Michael Penix Jr., Atlanta Falcons

Penix took over as the Falcons' starter when Kirk Cousins struggled down the stretch last year. He only went 1-2 in three starts and threw three touchdown passes against three interceptions. While the stats don’t blow you away, there are reasons to be encouraged for the future.

Penix also showcased a big arm and stepped up late in a game against the Washington Commanders with Atlanta’s season on the line.

Atlanta will now have an entire offseason to craft an offense catered to his skill set. It will also give Penix time to develop chemistry with Drake LondonDarnell Mooney, and the other Falcons skill players. This situation is not quite as good as McCarthy’s, but things are set up well for Penix. All of this makes him a fine QB2 option to target in trades or start-up drafts.

Dynasty Fantasy Football QB Sell Candidates

Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs

We now have plenty of evidence of what Mahomes looks like in an offense without tight end Travis Kelce playing at the elite level he used to. The offense as a whole, even at the start of the season, was simply much less productive than in the early years of his tenure. Elite TEs elevate quarterbacks much more than people realize, and with Kelce's inevitable age-related decline, Mahomes' stats have dipped and not yet recovered.

The wide receiver situation isn't great, and though K.C. has invested heavily in it in the last two seasons with WRs Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy being chosen early in its draft classes, it might not be enough.

Things would have certainly looked different if Kelce were still playing at an elite level, like he was in 2022. That season, even after the departure of one of the best WRs in the NFL, Tyreek Hill, Mahomes threw for 5,250 yards, 41 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. The impact an elite Kelce had on Mahomes' stats can't be denied.

It's unlikely they'll ever recover, unless the team somehow lucks into one of the best TEs to play the game down the road. That's not something you should count on. Something slightly better than his stats from the last two seasons is the ceiling we should come to expect in the most likely scenario.

And with that in mind, he's not worth his price tag right now. You can sell someone else the hope that he'll return to his prolific ways.

- John Johnson

C.J. Stroud, Houston Texans

C.J. Stroud’s rookie season in 2023 was magical for fantasy managers. Stroud finished as the QB10 in fantasy (18.7 points per game) by completing 63.9% of his passes for 4,108 yards and 23 touchdowns with five interceptions. By all accounts, his arrow was pointing straight up in dynasty. Unfortunately, Stroud could not keep the momentum going in his second year.

Stroud regressed in 2024, completing just 63.2% of his passes for 3,727 yards and 20 touchdowns with 12 interceptions. His fantasy production also plummeted, finishing as the QB31 in points per game (13.7 points). The loss in production can be tied to injuries to wide receivers Stefon Diggs and Tank Dell. However, the greater concern was just how poorly Stroud played behind a bad offensive line.

In 2023, Stroud was able to dissect opposing offenses by operating in a clean pocket on 69.1% of his dropbacks (21st in the NFL). Even when he was pressured, Stroud was able to post a respectable 52% completion rate for 871 yards and three touchdowns with zero interceptions.

Last season, Stroud had a clean pocket on just 59.4% of his dropbacks (second worst, ahead of only Deshaun Watson). He also regressed as a passer while under pressure. His completion percentage dropped to 46.3%. He also threw for just 994 yards and five touchdowns with two interceptions.

The Texans decided to move on from Laremy Tunsil (trade) and Shaq Mason (cut) this offseason. Those moves may help the morale in the locker room, but they were also Houston’s two most talented linemen. Additionally, Stroud will enter 2025 with Nico CollinsChristian Kirk, and two rookie receivers (Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel) at his disposal. Collins has developed into a stud, and Kirk is a solid veteran, but this group is less talented on paper than the receiver corps heading into 2024.

It is always difficult for pocket passers to break into the upper echelon of fantasy quarterbacks. Stroud was able to get close as a rookie, but he enters his third season with a patchwork offensive line and questionable weapons in the passing attack. Quarterback value is slow to adjust in dynasty leagues. Stroud may be a player worth selling, given the uphill battle he faces to become a top 10 quarterback again.
