One and Done Selections - The Open Championship

In this feature, our golf staff of Joe Nicely, Spencer Aguiar, Joe Idone, Matt Miller, Byron Lindeque, and our special guest will provide their weekly golf picks every Wednesday. The purpose of this article is to present you with alternative options to consider and hopefully make your selection a much easier process weekly. With that plan in mind, let's get started!

Joe Nicely - Tyrrell Hatton

First off, congrats to my bro Spencer Aguiar for nailing Bobby Mac with his Scottish Open OAD pick last week, as my choice of Wyndham Clark stalled out of the gate before getting it going in the final round. It’s hard to believe, but we’ve arrived at the last major championship of 2024 this week.

The Open is the hardest of all majors for a favorite to win, in my opinion, as the variable of weather, tee time draws, and the pure nature of links golf makes volatility an inherent part of this Championship. As a result, I’ll be skipping some “bigger names” I have available to me in favor of the fiery Englishman, Tyrrell Hatton.

The Open has been the major championship that's been the kindest to Hatton, and Royal Troon, specifically, was the site of his best finish in any major when he recorded a T5 in the 2016 Open. Maybe it's recency bias, but I saw Hatton absolutely striping it with my own eyes when I walked several holes with him at LIV Nashville - an event he went on to win - less than a month ago.

In one of his post-round press conferences that week he also credited a small adjustment in his putting stance as a huge confidence booster on the greens. The Englishman again looked sharp last week en route to a third-place finish at LIV Andalucia and appears primed to be just the latest LIV golfer to seriously contend in a major championship setting.

Spencer Aguiar - Tyrrell Hatton

Alternate - Bryson DeChambeau

I would have loved the opportunity to play Tommy Fleetwood in this spot, but the sentiment goes for both Fleetwood and Hatton.

What you think their win equity is most weeks won't hold 100% true here because of the Links-style fit both possess to the course.

I will bet on that upside on Hatton, as I continue to try and chase down my Frankenstein creation of Mia.
