RotoBaller PGA: One And Done Staff Picks - The Mexico Open At Vidanta

The PGA RotoBaller staff digs into their One and Done selections for The Mexico Open At Vidanta. Here are some under-the-radar plays and picks for this week's event.

Here at RotoBaller, we are always searching for ways to give our readers the best fantasy sports content possible. With that goal in mind, we are very proud to announce the weekly PGA “One and Done” column will be back for the sixth season.

For an in-depth breakdown of the top DraftKings and FanDuel plays, check out Joe Nicely's weekly Horse For The Course, which highlights the best fits for the week's course. And you can also find out who the smart money is on by checking out Spencer Aguiar's PGA DFS: Vegas Report every week.

One and Done Selections - The Mexico Open At Vidanta

In this feature, our golf staff of Joe Nicely, Spencer Aguiar, Joe Idone, Matt Miller, Byron Lindeque, and our special guest will provide their weekly golf picks every Wednesday. The purpose of this article is to present you with alternative options to consider and hopefully make your selection a much easier process weekly. With that plan in mind, let's get started!

Joe Nicely - Nicolai Hojgaard

Alternate -

Hoping to come alive in this contest this week in Mexico, I’m rolling with an exciting young up-and-comer in Nicolai Hojgaard. A beast off the tee, Hojgaard has the distance needed to thrive on this lengthy Vidanta Villarta layout. He’ll also be getting his second look at this layout, as he posted a T33 in his Mexico Open debut last year.

Already a three-time winner on the DP World Tour, the 22-year-old Dane has the potential to be a star player. His transition to the PGA Tour has already produced a runner-up finish at Torrey Pines, another long, driver-heavy layout. There’s lots of upside here, and while Tony Finau is certainly a solid option, I’m content to push my chips in on the youngster this week.

Yearly Earnings - $591,193
Yearly Cuts Made - 5/6

Joe Idone - Nicolai Hojgaard

Alternate -

It’s an interesting week for OAD given the opportunity to use players that are projected as favorites, which you may never consider wanting to use again the rest of the year. One of those guys for me is young Nicolai Hojgaard. Hojgaard will tee it up this week as the second favorite behind only Tony Finau in Mexico in what appears to be an ideal course fit for his game.

We’ll see him quite a bit this season play in events with lesser-than-normal field strength that end up as birdie-fests, but none are as long or reward sheer distance as much as Vidanta will. It’s a great opportunity to catch a player in form at a well-suited track. I’m deploying the bomber Hojgaard to hopefully come away with a trophy in Puerto Vallarta for the Mexico Open.

Yearly Earnings - $1,588,227
Yearly Cuts Made - 5/6

Spencer Aguiar - Nicolai Hojgaard

Alternate - Stephan Jaeger

I am an addict who didn't even save Tony Finau long enough to use him here in Mexico. That said, Nicolai Hojgaard is a natural pivot when diving into the slight reduction we will get in ownership away from the American.

I've been saying all week that Hojgaard graded as a top-20 caliber golfer entering 2024 when I ran my model to account for all tournaments this season. There is an argument to be made that saving him for somewhere more significant could make sense, but with a schedule that isn't locked in for the year, I will grab a golfer who doesn't have a broken putter.

Yearly Earnings - $1,102,732
Yearly Cuts Made - 6/6

Matt Miller - Tony Finau

Sometimes you need to just not overthink it. In the two year existence of the Mexico Open, Finau has finished first and second. He is the best player in the field by a wide margin and his approach numbers are looking terrific.
He has obvious troubles with the putter that he is currently going through and I don't know if or when that will be resolved. That being said, my lack of trust for Finau and his putter make me more inclined to use him this week in Mexico. He is a player who I am not dying to use the rest of the way. Why not use him in a field where he is the best player by a clear margin and while his irons are hot?

Yearly Earnings - $1,534,513
Yearly Cuts Made - 5/6

Byron Lindeque - Chan Kim

Scottie Scheffler has been playing golf from tee-to-green like Tiger Woods in his prime. Something else he has in common with the Cat? Neither has finished better than T7 around Riviera Country Club. Both have won the Masters with many who own a green jacket having won at Riv, too. Yet, two of the greatest ball strikers to grace this earth have not even cracked a top-five around there. Utterly baffling.

I would imagine the leaderboard at the end of the week looks like nothing any of us expected sitting here on a Wednesday night, so I had to decide between Tony Finau and …. CHAN KIM!

Kim won back-to-back events on the KFT after missing four consecutive cuts leading up to that magical eight-round stretch. He plays his best golf on easy courses and in a KFT-type field, Kim may find himself feeling the most comfortable he has felt in a PGA Tour event lately. There have been glimpses of good putting and great ball striking to start the year, with hopes that we catch lightning in a bottle this week.

Yearly Earnings - $1,133,925
Yearly Cuts Made - 5/6

Mia The Model - Nicolai Hojgaard

Alternate - Stephan Jaeger
