Wil Myers Looks To Be More Consistent
7 years agoWil Myers enters his age-27 season along with Eric Hosmer as the co-faces of the San Diego Padres. Myers has turned in consecutive seasons with over 150 games played, averaging 29 HRs 90 runs, 84 RBI, 24 SB and a .795 OPS. Considering the offensive woes in San Diego (last in runs scored), those are passable counting stats. Despite the well-rounded fantasy contribution, there are two overriding knocks on Myers. First, he's a streaky player with a trough-to-peak OPS last season ranging from .643 (August) to .953 (September). Myers admits he struggles mentally amidst slumps and has apparently sought advice from a sports psychologist over the offseason. Secondly, he strikes out too often with a 27.7% rate in 2017 and a 24.9% for his career. Nonetheless, if Myers can improve his plate discipline, his 41.4% hard-contact rate from last season could lead to a more impressive and consistent stat-line in 2018. There are bullish offensive signals in San Diego as he and Hosmer take the reins with a young core of players towards a new age in Padres baseball. Myers is a solid four-category player. His 1B/OF eligibility and current 69 ADP seems like a worthy investment for a player on an ascending team.
