Vladimir Guerrero Jr. 2020 Outlook: Will He Rebound In Sophomore Season?
5 years agoVladimir Guerrero Jr. didn't hit the ground running like some of the other rookie hitters in the league last season, but optimism still surrounds him after his 123-game sample. Batting in the meat of the order for the Blue Jays, he slashed .272/.339/.433 with 15 HR, 52 R, and 69 RBI while proving he wasn't out of his league with a respectable 17.7% K-rate. Guerrero Jr. was a bit slow out of the gate hitting .251 with eight long balls through the end of June, but he turned it around with a .313 BA and seven HR over the next two months. His September, however, was forgettable after a .232 BA with no round-trippers. Guerrero Jr. also finished in the league's bottom-20 in ground-ball rate (50.4%), a trend he carried over from the minors, but something that needs to improve if he wants to hang with the league's top power bats. The Blue Jays will give him every opportunity he needs to succeed, but only time will tell if he can make the adjustments to take the next step in his career. Guerrero Jr.'s future remains bright, but he hasn't proven enough at the major-league level to justify a top-50 pick in redraft leagues yet.
