Ty Gibbs Collects His First Cup Series Top-10 Finish Since May At Chicago
5 months agoTy Gibbs finished third after looking like one of the early favorites to win the Grant Park 165 at the Chicago Street Course. Starting from the second position, Gibbs took control of the race early from Kyle Larson, leading the first 11 laps before losing the lead to Shane Van Gisbergen. The No. 54 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota driver was passed by Christopher Bell later, ending the first stage in the third position and scoring stage points. In the second stage, Gibbs took advantage of a great pit stop to restart second and take the lead from Zane Smith before the race was delayed for rain. Once the race resumed, Gibbs maintained a top-5 position even through cautions before pitting on lap 43 for dry tires, ending the second stage in 15th. In the final stage, Gibbs charged through the field and made it back to third, recording his ninth top-10 finish of the year and his first since Charlotte on May 26. With the Cup Series heading to Pocono next, Gibbs could be a contender as he led four laps and finished fifth in his last appearance at the site.
