Trevor Rogers 2022 Outlook: Ready to Build on Breakout
Marlins starting pitcher Trevor Rogers was tasked to prove that he deserved to join a talented young rotation in Miami as 2021 began. By year's end, he may have emerged as the best of the bunch. Rogers was dominant from the jump, posting a 1.29 ERA and 1.00 WHIP in five April starts while striking out 38 batters in 28 innings. He never slowed down and ended up with a 2.64 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, and 28.5% K%. The downside is that he only won seven of his 25 starts due to poor run support.
Rogers is a 6'5" lefty who relies mainly on his four-seamer at 57.7% usage and mixes in a slider and changeup. He gets up to 95 MPH on his fastball but it's the horizontal movement more so than velocity that dominates hitters. He has the ability to limit big flies, allowing only six homers all year, and has a pither-friendly home park that make him a good bet to repeat last year's breakout season. Despite outperforming teammate Sandy Alcantara in ratios and strikeouts, Rogers is being selected several rounds later. Plucking him just inside the top 100 picks could net a discount ace on draft day.
