T.J. Hockenson 2024 Fantasy Football Outlook: Risky TE1 Option Coming Back From Injury, And QB Change
7 months agoMinnesota Vikings tight end T.J. Hockenson (knee) had an outstanding 2023 season, establishing himself as one of the elite tight ends in the NFL. Hockenson suffered a torn ACL and MCL in his right knee on December 26. The 26-year-old underwent surgery in January, and it's unclear if he will be ready by Week 1. Prior to the injury, he played a crucial role in the Vikings' offense, finishing the season with 95 receptions for 960 yards and five touchdowns. His ability to create mismatches and be a reliable target in the passing game made him a top-tier fantasy option, finishing as a top-three tight end in most formats despite missing a couple of games. However, the significant change this season is that Hockenson will no longer catch passes from fantasy-friendly Kirk Cousins. The tight end will now rely upon veteran quarterback Sam Darnold and rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy to get him the ball. If the rookie gets the start for Minnesota, Hockenson could be a central figure in the Vikings' passing game, often serving as McCarthy's safety valve and a primary red-zone target. Despite the change at quarterback and as long he avoids the PUP list, Hockenson should still be a TE1 in 2024, but with lower expectations. His high target volume, red-zone usage, and role in a potent offense make him a cornerstone for any fantasy team. Hockenson should be targeted in the early to mid-rounds of fantasy drafts. Fantasy managers need to monitor his progress from knee surgery during training camp. He is currently listed as the 117th in RotoBaller's player rankings, which could be a little low considering the success he has brought to the Vikings. A healthy Hockenson offers a high floor and significant upside but should be cautiously drafted.
