Shin-Soo Choo 2020 Outlook: Consistent Production For A Late Draft Pick
5 years agoShin-Soo Choo had a quietly productive season in 2019 batting atop the Rangers lineup. The veteran outfielder batted .265 with 24 homers, 61 RBI and 92 runs scored while adding 15 stolen bases in 151 games. Choo didn't luck into those numbers either, his average exit velocity was a robust 91.3 MPH as he set a new career-high in hard-hit rate and finished ninth in baseball with 49 percent of batted balls hit 95-plus MPH. Despite making more hard contact, Choo's calling card will always be his ability to get on base. Choo's career walk-rate is a pristine 12.2 percent and his on-base percentage has been over 100 points higher than his batting average two-straight seasons giving him more fantasy value in points leagues or those that use OBP. Choo hits too many grounders to be an asset in batting average or home runs, but he's been a solid fantasy contributor for years and has been reliable, recording at least 636 plate appearances three straight years despite the fact he'll turn 38 this season. An ADP near 250 overall is a more than fair price to pay for a player that should score 90-plus runs for the fourth straight season batting leadoff for a good Texas lineup. Throw in 20-25 homers and double-digit stolen bases and Choo should return solid value for a late-round draft pick.
