Paul Sewald 2024 Player Outlook: Solid Closer Option Set To Begin 2024 On The IL
11 months agoDespite his numbers regressing following the trade to Arizona, Paul Sewald remained a fantasy asset. Over the entire season, in 65 appearances (60.2 IP) Sewald had a 3-2 W-L record, 3.12 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, 80 Ks and 34 saves. After putting up a 2.93 ERA with the Mariners (43.0 IP), Sewald had a 3.57 ERA with the Diamondbacks (17.2 IP). The concern is the 4.92 xFIP and 4.34 SIERA in Arizona after having a 3.29 xFIP and 2.76 SIERA in Seattle. It's only a small sample and across the entire year, Sewald had a 3.76 xFIP and 3.23 SIERA which is much more in line with his season ERA. Sewald had a 50.0% FB% (according to Fangraphs) which was tenth highest among the 162 qualified relievers. Chase Field has been more pitcher-friendly than T-Mobile Park when it comes to home runs. His increase in home runs allowed following the trade again looks like a case of small sample luck. Unfortunately, Sewald has a Grade 2 oblique strain and will begin the year on the IL. There's currently no timeline for Sewald's return but it's unlikely we'll see him in April. He's worthwhile stashing on your IL but is now only worth a late pick to round out your bullpen.
